It’s always intriguing how filmmakers create sound effects for films such as Star Wars and creatures such as dinosaurs, we don’t really have much to reference off when it comes to environments and subjects as such.
One would think good sounds plucked out of a computer would do the trick, well that’s what we do now but those sounds had to start off organically somewhere by some risk taking sound dude.
I remember when mixing the sound with sound engineer Luke for my feature zombie epic ‘The Counterpart’ we were using a lot of sound effects I had sourced for free off the internet and through Apple Soundtrack Pro program. Towards the end though we ended up creating our own unique sound effects in the studio with glasses of water, pen lids and paper just to get that right sound we needed for certain scenes. It’s amazing what mixing a couple of different sound together can achieve.
